Family ties run deep in 27J Schools.
27J Schools is, for many, a school district where everybody knows your name. Some families have had several generations attending the same schools. Teachers may have had a student’s mom or dad in class years ago or now teach grandchildren of former students.
That’s the way it is for the Gallegos family of Brighton (Brighton High School, SD27J, Otho E Stuart Middle School, Northeast Elementary School, North Elementary School, South Elementary School, Henderson Elementary School) who have attended local schools and have had three generations working in the District. The Gallegos family currently has four family members working in schools; two others retired from the District. The youngest in the family attends school in 27J.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs make education relevant and important for many students by introducing them to real world experiences.
Jean Schneider teaches business CTE courses at Prairie View High School, following a successful career in the technology industry. Schneider knew her experience and skills could benefit students after participating in job fairs and seeing first hand that many students lacked the basic skills necessary to successfully land a job.
“The great thing about the courses I teach is that my students take what they learn in class and apply it to the
real world,” said Schneider. “I have students tell me that they have used the skills taught in my class to land a job and feel confident in their abilities.”

This week marked another first for 27J Schools and Brighton High School, SD27J: the offering of dental services in school!
Brighton High’s school-based health center–a resource made possible through our collaboration with Kids First Health Care, Salud Family Health Centers, and Community Reach Center–will now offer students preventive dental services once a week, provided by Salud.
“For those of us in the dental field, we know that for high schoolers, oral health isn’t always at the top of the priority list,” said Ethan Kerns, DDS, Salud’s Chief Dental Officer. “We know that performance in school does falter when they’re having dental pain. If we can come to the school, make the kids more comfortable, reduce barriers to parents taking time off of work and students missing school, and help their performance, it’s really a win for everybody.”

CoBiz Financial’s Biz Bash and the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation generously contributed the funding for dental equipment to make this project possible.

We are #27JProud to report that in 2018, all five of our high schools saw an increase in graduation rates and, overall, outperformed the state average!
The Colorado Department of Education recently announced that state-wide the four-year graduation rate increased from 79 to 80.7 percent for the class of 2018. Here in 27J we saw our rate increase from 77.4 to 81.5 percent in 2018 (4.1 percent growth)!
“I could not be more proud of the progress we continue to make in our graduation rates year over year,” said 27J Schools Superintendent Dr. Chris Fiedler.
“There is still much work to be done to ensure that all students earn a diploma and demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge to prepare them for future success. However, we certainly want to acknowledge and celebrate the Class of 2018, their families, and the dedicated and talented adults that were a part of their educational journey in 27J Schools, as we continue to work towards being the schools and school district that our community can believe in most!”
